How to Start an Apprenticeship in Ontario

Prerequisites

For the specific trades the FTI Ontario provides apprenticeship training for, the minimum prerequisites are:

  • Grade 10 education or equivalency as recognized in Ontario
  • Have the capacity to understand and perform the trade mathematics, trade English language, and other trade related technical academic skills
  • Possess appropriate hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity
  • Be physically fit to work in construction
  • A strong commitment to complete the Apprenticeship program
  • Successfully complete the application process, including an in-person suitability interview
  • Possess a valid driver’s license or be eligible to obtain one
  • Must have legal permission to work in Canada (i.e. have a valid Social Insurance Number)

Notes

  1. The IUPAT is looking for motivated, reliable, hard working team players who recognize the benefits that working in a Unionized Trade in Ontario can bring.
  2. Employment in the construction trades in Ontario can have slow and busy periods. Employment is driven by the demands of the industry.
  3. A deposit for Union initiation fee and Skilled Trades Ontario (STO) membership will be collected for selected candidates for apprenticeship. This money will be used for your Union initiation fee and STO membership once you join the IUPAT.
  4. All apprenticeship programs in Ontario and Health & Safety training is provided FREE to members of the IUPAT.
