Financial Support for Apprentices in Ontario
While you complete your apprenticeship training at FTI, you may be eligible for funding and supports through the federal and provincial government programs, such as the Apprenticeship Incentive Grant or the Canada Apprentice Loan.
Apprenticeship Incentive Grants
- The Apprenticeship Incentive Grant (AIG) is a taxable cash grant of $1,000 per year or per level, up to a maximum amount of $2,000 per person.
- The Apprenticeship Completion Grant (ACG) is a taxable cash grant of $2,000 for registered apprentices who complete their apprenticeship training and obtain their Journeyperson Certificate of Qualification.
Canada Apprentice Loan
Starting January 2015, you can apply for up to $4,000 in interest-free loans per period of technical training with the Canada apprentice loan. The money will be available to you to help pay for tuition, tools, equipment and living expenses, to cover forgone wages or to help support your family. Learn more.
Apprenticeship Completion Bonus in Non-Red Seal Trades
This completion bonus is a taxable cash grant of $2,000. The grant is available to registered apprentices after they successfully complete their apprenticeship training and obtain their Certificate of Apprenticeship and, where available, their C of Q in any Ontario non-Red Seal trade, on or after April 1, 2009.
RESP Proceeds
Apprentices when in school (and potentially when working on the job) may be eligible to receive funds from RESP programs. Apprentices should check with their RESP administrator to inquire about accessing funds from their account.
Support Allowance
This is provided by the Province of Ontario and is a targeted benefit for apprentices attending in-school apprenticeship training. The benefit is variable depending on the specifics of each apprentice. Allowances may include travel, living away from home, daycare, etc.
New! Ontario Tools Grant
As announced on May 22, 2020, the Ontario government has offered new eligible apprentices a non-repayable grant of $600 to purchase the tools/equipment/PPE they need to start their careers.
To be eligible for the new grant, apprentices must have:
- completed level 1 training on or after April 1, 2020;

Apprentice Education Fund (AEF)
For union affiliated apprentices, their collective agreement requires apprentices to contribute $1.00/hour for every worked hour from their after tax pay. This is deducted from their pay and submitted by their employer which is held in trust. Apprentices collect these funds when attending apprenticeship schooling. The program ends when the apprentice graduates from advanced level school.
