FTI Ontario offers two different painter apprenticeships. Let’s explore both to help you decide which one is right for your career path!

Painter Apprenticeship Options Available

Commercial Painter and Decorator Apprenticeship

Having an eye for colour and detail, a commercial painter and decorator is adept at working with their hands, comfortable with heights, and versed in precise and creative work.

Main responsibilities include applying paint, wallpaper, and other finishes to interior and exterior surfaces of buildings and other structures. A commercial painter and decorator is usually employed by construction companies, painting contractors and building maintenance departments, but can also be self-employed.

Industrial Painter Apprenticeship

An experienced industrial painter has several responsibilities, including painting, washing, basic rigging, paint prepping, and general maintenance on parts, steel, aluminum, and equipment.

This trade also requires a strong knowledge of a variety of painting techniques and the ability to select accurate tools necessary for specific tasks at hand.

FTI Ontario Painter Apprenticeship Programs

FTI Ontario offers rewarding painter apprenticeship programs for both Industrial Painters and Commercial Painters and Decorators, which are voluntary trades.

Both programs have the same entry requirements:

  • Grade 10 and proof of a minimum of 16 credits
  • Minimum age of 16 years old
  • Completion of a 6,000-hour painter apprenticeship program

The length of each program is the same, which includes:

  • 6,000 hours, which takes about three to four years to complete
  • 720 hours entail in-school training
  • 5,280 hours cover working in the trade as a painter apprentice

When it comes to wages, both Industrial Painters and Commercial Painters and Decorators earn a percentage of a full journeyman’s wages while working as an apprentice. The percentage is based on the hours that are accumulated with each program level passed and while working.
